The Classics are back

Last week I was in Angus and Robertson in town. At the front there was a table with “Classics” from my reading when I was in my 20’s. No, not Bunyan or any of the real classics, but the adventure books which today seen absolutley simple in plot and development by comparison with the Ludlums of this world.

Guns of Navarrone, Elmore Leonard or the true story books like The Great Escape were marked with the black stripe underneath and set at $6 or 5 for $25.

Stories with very little in the erotica or sexual fantasy description which crowds many current titles. Just good honest storytelling which had a sense of believability. It was possible to imagine yourself (at your best of course) in place in the story. Hardly possible to be a Jason Bourne is it?

How marvellous that these titles are back. My grandson (an avid reader) will devour them imaginatively and safely.
